neon-tetra-1
Neon Tetra

The Neon Tetra (Paracheirodon innesi) is one of the most recognisable and popular freshwater aquarium fish. Native to the soft, acidic waters of South America, this small schooling species is famous for its brilliant iridescent blue stripe and vivid red colouring. Peaceful, active and highly social, Neon Tetras are an excellent choice for planted community aquariums and look particularly impressive when kept in a large group.

Maximum adult size: Approximately 4 cm

Temperament: Peaceful and social. Neon Tetras should be kept in groups of at least 6, although groups of 10 or more encourage more natural schooling behaviour and create a much more striking display. They are best housed with other small, peaceful community species.

Difficulty of care: Easy to moderate. Once settled into a mature, stable aquarium, Neon Tetras are relatively straightforward to maintain. They can be sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry, so good water quality and consistent parameters are important.

Preferred Temperature: 20–26 °C

Preferred pH of water: 5.0–7.5. They naturally inhabit soft, acidic water and generally show their best colouration in slightly acidic conditions.

Type of breeding: Egg scatterer. Females scatter small eggs amongst fine-leaved plants or spawning material, which are then fertilised by the male. The adults provide no parental care and may eat the eggs, so dedicated breeding aquariums are normally required for successful reproduction.

Neon Tetras thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of live plants, areas of subdued lighting and open swimming space. Darker substrates and backgrounds can help emphasise their intense blue and red colouration. Gentle to moderate water movement is preferred.

They are omnivorous and readily accept good-quality fine flakes, micro-pellets and appropriately sized frozen or live foods. Small foods such as baby brine shrimp, daphnia and cyclops can be offered to provide variety. Feeding small portions once or twice daily is generally sufficient.
